The discover of placer gold in 1866 near present-day Leesburg, and the resultant gold rush, led to lode gold discoveries in the surrounding area. Gold was reportedly first discovered on the U.P. & Burlington mine in the hills near Salmon, Idaho in 1882. This project was closed during World War II and is now ready to be re-opened.
